When The CW developed The Originals as a spin-off series, The Vampire Diaries
did not just lose one of its big baddies. It also lost one of the
show's most talked about relationships: Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and
Caroline (Candice Accola).
Klaus' unrequited love for Elena's (Nina Dobrev) best friend was a compelling storyline, and when Klaus got his own show the pair were divided not just by Caroline's complicated feelings, but also by actual physical distance.
In an interview with Digital Spy on August 26, The Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder (Damon) suggested that the series, which débuted in 2009, could end with Season 6. If that's the case, then there would be an opportunity for some characters to appear more frequently on The Originals, which is still going strong as it approaches its second season.Source
